Rare jug with two handles in glazed white Iberian faience and decorated with stylized branches in blue. Most likely a container called “Alcarraza”, an earthenware container, traditionally made in Spain and Portugal. Utility piece from the 17th century in relatively good condition given its age and obvious use over the centuries. Very presumably of Portuguese or Spanish manufacture for a refined clientele, considering its refined shape. It has some flaws and abrasions, but has not been restored.
For appreciation, a painting by Francisco de Zurbarán, Bodegón, currently in the Prado Museum, Madrid, dating from 1650, is indicated, with an identically shaped container, called “Alcarraza”.
Iberian Peninsula, 17th Century.
