An elegant figure in earthenware from a burial site of the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), representing a Chinese dancer from the Imperial court who moves her arms in cadence, wearing a traditional garment of that time called “Hanfu”, which was usually made of silk and composed of three overlapping tunics. Piece that is coated with clayey sediment, the result of having been underground, retains traces of the original polychrome in red.
This earthenware model of a dancer was made to entertain the tomb occupants into eternity. Captured mid-movement, the woman appears to be performing a gentle, elegant dance that highlights her long sleeves.
China, Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD).
