Sculpture of a lion lying on a pedestal in Carrara marble, according to the famous work by the sculptor Antonio Canova for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s Basilica in 1792. This sculpture was executed by an unidentified master and later sold in Great Britain, as the base has a bronze medal inlaid with the sphinxes of Minerva and Mercury (created by the sculptor William Wion in 1826), from the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, which was a certificate of quality attested by this society in Britain since the 18th Century. Magnificently elaborate sculpture, faithfully reproducing the original work.
At the bottom of the base, there are some small chips. Standing on a mahogany wood base.
Italy, 19th Century.
